Yes, in fifth grade a friend and I sang an Olivia Newton John song at our grade school talent show.
1) Was there ever a time you were frightened for you life?
Passing a logging truck on a 2-lane road (one lane each direction) ... I was tired of being behind it but didn't know it was pulling TWO trailers instead of just one load of logs... until I was fully committed. Horns were blaring and I barely made it. My passenger was probably scarred for life. I still shake a little bit over it, and it happened 26 years ago.

3) What is on the walls of the room you are in?
Three large paintings: a folk-art pastoral scene with sheep (their red eyes creep me out a little), a gnarled old Live Oak in the Hill Country, and a woman walking on a path in the North Woods of Wisconsin. The first we purchased, the second we acquired, and the 3rd was my mother's.

Usually between 10-10:30pm. Seeing as how it is now after midnight, I'm up waaaaay past my bedtime.

http://thesmittenimage.blogspot.com/ where Hilary always has beautiful photos and prose, and I've been trying to educate myself to take better photos via http://shootabout.com/

6) Are you a morning person or a night owl?
I'n a night owl but my husband is working hard to transform me into a morning person. Tomorrow AM will be rough.
7) Have you ever, as a kid or an adult, participated in a talent show? What was your talent?
I chickened out and didn't go through with it, but up until 1 week beforehand, I was going to sing the Styx song "Babe" for a middle school talent show. I was in 7th grade, my brother was in 8th grade, and I couldn't bear to be up there in front of his friends. I've been thinking about it lately and really wishing I'd gone through with it.

7) Have you ever, as a kid or an adult, participated in a talent show? What was your talent?
In yr 8 some friends and I got on stage for auditions for the school concert. I can't remember what we sang but we dressed up as Diana Prince/WonderWoman except to save my blushes I put a paper bag over my head before attaching the crown. We got the laughs and all went well until we finished when I got rushed by the Yr 9 girls so they could find out who was hiding inside.
1) Was there ever a time you were frightened for you life? I feared for my life the night I helped a girlfriend kick her abusive boyfriend out of the house. He was crazy scary and I called my brother beforehand to give him all the details in case I disappeared.

I am loving Margaret Cho's blog so much right now, also adore Tavi Tulle's (StyleRookie) new site Rookie magazine, and I live vicariously through David Lebovitz as he makes a beautifully sweet life in Paris. If I really fessed up, I'd admit to a Pinterest problem.
6) Are you a morning person or a night owl? Night owl, but I am not grumpy when my dogs roust me at 7:30. I do hop back in bed for a couple more hours quite often.
7) Have you ever, as a kid or an adult, participated in a talent show? What was your talent? Yes! As a second grader I sang Elton John's Saturday Night. It was epic. There was some talk among a few attendees that I could attribute my rather gauche choice of song to being the product of a broken home. I wanted to explain that I just couldn't figure out an arrangement for Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds-serious Beatles fan at the time.
1) Was there ever a time you were frightened for you life?
I'm sure there were many times I should've been, but what comes to mind is every time I've been on a roller coaster (except Space Mountain) and when I gave birth.

7) Have you ever, as a kid or an adult, participated in a talent show? What was your talent?
I did as a teenager. I had no talent, but sang Hotel California with my best friend at the time as though I did.
1) Was there ever a time you were frightened for you life?

Anywhere from 10pm to 1am.
5) What are your current three favorite websites/blogs (besides this one, of course)?

It's hard to pick favorites, but besides The Manor, I enjoy http://blackbird17.blogspot.com/ ... http://www.theredneckmommy.com/ ... http://jugglinglife.typepad.com/juggling_life/ ... and I really need a 4th pick ... http://smittenkitchen.com/

Both, unfortunately ... but I have more success waking early than staying up late.
7) Have you ever, as a kid or an adult, participated in a talent show? What was your talent?
Not really ... I do remember one piano recital - I was in 5th grade. Apparently, duets with parents were a possibility - although I swear the teacher never told me that. My Mom was devastated (she was a very gifted pianist.) Yeah, good times.

7. I would have DIED first. But I do sing pretty well.
1) Was there ever a time you were frightened for you life? Yes, I was twelve years old and caught in a riptide. A man who had been drinking on the beach thought he could *save* me. It was only in my attempts to swim away from his reeking breath and flailing arms trying to gram me that I inadvertantly swam sideways and out of the current.

1) Was there ever a time you were frightened for you life? I've been in NY taxi cabs often, but the time that really sticks out is the time I went for a run at about 11:00 at night, in my skinny little twenties body in my skimpy little running clothes. I was running alone around a track and was suddenly so overcome with fear that I had to sprint to my car and lock myself in. Not sure if the danger was in my head or some instinctual thing, but I've never forgotten it.

6) Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Total morning person, I'm usually up around 4:30 AM. I used to be a night owl in my younger days but now that middle age has smacked me in the face, apparently I'm morphing into my father. Well, not quite. He used to get up at 3:30 AM and commence with happy whistling in the kitchen, much to my mother's chagrin. I can't whistle. Thank God.
7) Have you ever, as a kid or an adult, participated in a talent show? What was your talent?
Umm, I have no talent. But I did participate in the 4th grade spring fair at our elementary school where a group of girls performed the Charleston. Mom made me a pretty satin dress in pale pink with fringe on the bottom that swirled when I danced. She also made a matching headband with a fluffy feather tucked inside. I was cute, for sure. But I still had no talent.

1) Was there ever a time you were frightened for you life?
I've seen my life flash before my eyes a few times, but I don't know that I had time to feel real fear in those instances. I've also been in serious danger before and not really realized it until afterwards. The time I remember feeling most frightened and vulnerable is when my family was backpacking in Colorado. We were on a mountain in a pretty bad thunderstorm in this tiny tent and heard lightning hit a tree very close to us. We prayed and then spent the thunderstorm singing songs and being silly to distract ourselves because there was nowhere to go. Mostly I was afraid for my children and my husband more than myself, though. I felt as long as they were safe, it would be okay.

3) What is on the walls of the room you are in?
I'm in the kitchen looking into the dining room. There is nothing on the walls really in here, just things above the cabinets: decorative plates, a barn cookie jar set, a pinewood Derby car made to look like the '47 Chevy pickup my husband rebuilt, two antique stoneware jugs, sunflowers, baskets, river glass in a huge jar, bottles found down by the river, a large and ornate ceramic mug, rooster figurines, a wooden I<3 roosters sign, blue Mason jars with more river glass, a syrup pitcher shaped like a standing bear, a soup tureen with a chicken shaped knob on the lid, stars made from twigs, a wicker rooster, various animal skulls found in the woods, and three 8x12 prints of sunflower photos I entered in a local contest. On the walls in the dining room are three Pioneer Woman sunset photos, a photo by Tom Parker of an old truck and sign at sunset, and a self portrait print (maybe intaglio?) my brother made.

1) Was there ever a time you were frightened for you life?
Yes. When I was 17 I worked for a local carry-out Pizza Hut that was on a street known for it's prostitution and drug dealing. One night I didn't manage to get a ride from one of the drivers to go home, it was around midnight, and as I was walking to the bus stop some guy started following me in his truck. As I was running to get away I tripped and fell and he stopped the truck, got out, and started trying to make me get in "so he could take me to the hospital in case I really hurt myself". I screamed bloody murder and a couple of guys coming out of a 24hr fitness around the corner came to my rescue. I never took the bus home from there again.

One Japanese animation cel, two Boris Vallejo posters, one original watercolor miniature dragon, then the "collage" above my desk: a pen and ink of dolphins swimming to a castle in the sky, an original watercolor of a dragon building a snow dragon, a print of a winged cat originally in watercolor, an original gouache of a lady in a greek building, and my poster of Angel's Landing from Zion National Park.
And some spiderwebs up in the corner.

www.gaiaonline.com
www.gocomics.com
www.etsy.com (but it's falling fast)
6) Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Early night owl. I don't do well at 2 am, but I do horribly at 7am. 9am meetings used to be my bugaboo - you're just not going to get my best at that hour because I'm not friggin' AWAKE.
7) Have you ever, as a kid or an adult, participated in a talent show? What was your talent?
Nope.
1) Was there ever a time you were frightened for you life?
Yes. Most recently a little over a year ago when I was driving over a mountain pass in a blinding snowstorm at night. My husband had to roll down his window and look for the line painted on the side of the road to confirm we were still on it. It was one of those stretches of road around here where there is nowhere safe to pull over or stop. I am never, ever doing that again.
2) Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 18, and find line 4. What does it say?
Nearest is a relative term, and I'm not going to get a tape measure to determine exact nearestness. So, here's one from the bookshelf next to me, "C++ for C Programmers": (it won't let me underline a title?!?)
"Object-oriented programming is a data-centered view of programming, meaning"

1) Was there ever a time you were frightened for you life?
I went horseback riding on a huge farm with friends when I was 16. Since I had ridden very few times before, they gave me the oldest gentlest horse to ride. Apparently something spooked it as we were slowly trotting along and it took off like a wild horse. Everyone was screaming to just hang on which I did for what felt like two hours but was probably 10-15 minutes. Eventually, he reared up and threw me off. I ended up with a mild concussion and a bruised hip but I thought for sure I was going to die.

I doze off at 9 just as a favorite show comes on and then awaken at 1 am and cannot fall back asleep until 5am. I think this makes me a vampire bat instead of a night owl.

Third grade- a sad little ballet solo. I thought I was graceful at the time.
1) Was there ever a time you were frightened for you life? I did an internship at the Philadelphia Zoo when I was in college. At that time, they created a video about the zoo as an incentive to donate money. I was helping the Director get some zookeeper footage behind the scenes in the polar bear house when I heard thumping feet, a loud roar and then a loud thwang! against the door into the polar bear enclosure. I have an image permanently implanted on my brain of a polar bear standing on its hind legs smacking the door. For a moment, I thought the bear was going to come through the door. I'm surprised I didn't need to change my pants.

We HAD to participate in a talent show at band camp. And the ironic thing is that no one ever played the instrument they played in band. I don't remember there being a rule against that. My talent? Usually the group I was in found a song to lip sync. I mostly remember hoping we didn't look too stupid.

I was 19, doing field work in the Gaspe, came across a bear and her two cubs. The trees were all too small to climb and the truck was locked. She didn't see me, so I very quietly climbed on top of the truck cab and scrunched down so that I wasn't very visible and stayed there until my partner (who happened to be my husband) came back with the damn keys.
